The overtime window (such as midnight to 6 a.m.)

Some contracts pay the hours in a set window, such as midnight to 6 a.m., as overtime from the very first hour. Your regular hours only start after the window ends.

How it works

  • Hours inside the window go straight onto your daily overtime, such as 1.5× for the first 2 hours, then 2×.

  • They don't count toward your regular hours. Your 8 regular hours start when the window ends.

  • If you keep working past your regular hours, overtime picks up where the window left off.

Example

A shift from 12:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at $39.51 an hour, with overtime at 1.5× after 8 hours and 2× after 10, and a midnight to 6 a.m. window:

  • 12:30 to 2:30 a.m., in the window: 2 hours at 1.5× = $118.53

  • 2:30 to 6:00 a.m., in the window: 3.5 hours at 2× = $276.57

  • 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.: 8 regular hours = $316.08

  • Total for 13.5 hours: $711.18

Setting it up

New union contracts already have a midnight to 6 a.m. overtime window. To change it:

  1. Go to Jobs, tap your job, then tap Contract rules.

  2. Tap Overtime window.

  3. Under Applies when, make sure Only between certain times is on, and set From and To.

  4. Tap Save, go back, and tap Save again on the job.

To remove the window, swipe left on Overtime window in Contract rules and tap Delete, then tap Save on the job.

Good to know

  • The window needs a Daily overtime rule, since that's where its rates come from.

  • A shift you entered at 1.5× or 2× isn't multiplied again. It's paid the higher of the two rates.

  • If your contract doesn't pay night hours as overtime, remove the window, or those hours will be paid as overtime.

  • Estimates only. Not legal advice. Check your collective agreement.
